The 2012-2013 Cubscout year completed Tuesday, May 14th with our annual Cross Over Ceremony.
Cubs crossed over the bridge to the next age group. Keep an eye on your email for activities this summer and for our start up date for next year!

Cameron Williams from Pack 54's Den 3 won the Makatewa District Pinewood Derby on May 4th, 2013. Cameron won the right to participate by doing so well in the Pack 54 Derby. Hopewell Cubs were invited to participate in this derby as our district did not hold a pinewood derby.

June 8&9 is the pack campout. We'll be camping out together at Caesar's Creek. Cost is $3/person and that covers dinner on Sat, breakfast on Sunday, your campsite and all the fun you can have. Campouts are a great chance to meet other cubscout families and earn electives over the summer.

Our Space Cadets blasted off during the 2012 Pack 54 Space Derby, which was held at the Monroe Lending Library on Saturday, October 20th. After passing a rigorous set of registration checks ("Glued, notched and has at least one hole in it? Check!"), cadets towed their space craft to the hangar bay for final inspection and maintenance prior to blast off. Then, with their engines wound tightly and craft lined up four abreast at the starting gate, the cadets collectively and loudly counted down, "THREE... TWO... ONE... BLAST OFF!!!" With the starting gate lowered, the space craft raced down the line to the cheers of the Cub Scouts and their families.
After a fun-filled day of racing--and some cookies and punch, of course!--the winners from each den were officially in the record books:

Last weekend, more than 80 total Cub Scouts and family members--including many Scouts new to Pack 54--gathered at the Timber Hill Park at Rentschler Forest Preserve for the Pack 54 August Campout. Rick Guba, Pack 54 leader extraordinaire, lit the campfire with an impressive display of flame throwing, tossing balls of fire from his bare hands (don't try this at home, kids!) into the Pack 54 fire ring and bringing to life multi-colored flames to highlight the various Cub Scouts emblems. Very Cool!!! Scouts and their families then enjoyed many entertaining songs and skits performed by other scouts, leaders and family members. Among the many hilarious skits was a particularly challenging one, in which I was given the opportunity to demonstrate my ninja prowess. Unfortunately, it turns out that I'm not actually a ninja, and I ended up soaking myself from head-to-toe with the water staged by none other than Den Leader Charlie "This is my last pack campout" Beorn. (Nervously chuckling, Charlie was later overheard saying, "I've decided not to spend the night, after all.") Alas, we will miss Charlie's campfire songs, even if he did show me that I'm more of a "pizza man" than a "Jackie Chan."
On Saturday morning, we assembled for a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs, and after raising the American flag, the Scouts headed off for a morning of activities that included a marshmallow gun range, a tough obstacle course, a scavenger hunt and a tomahawk-making station. For lunch, we enjoyed a quick meal of hot dogs, chips and bug juice, and after we made sure to Leave No Trace by walking through the fields and campsites to collect any trash that may have been left behind by ourselves and others who came before us, we lowered the flag and broke camp.
Throughout the weekend Scouts in all dens had the opportunity to earn advancement and belt loops, make new friends, learn new campfire songs and enjoy camping in the beautiful outdoors. Thanks to everyone who helped organize and carry out this great event, and a special thanks to our Outdoor Activities Committee for organizing the events and coordinating the meals.

This past Friday and Saturday, more than 70 total Cub Scouts and family members--including many Scouts new to Pack 54--gathered at the Timber Hill Park at Rentschler Forest Preserve for the Pack 54 June Campout. The festivities kicked off with a tale of dragon lore by Blue Flame Patrol's Den Leader, Mr. Beorn. The opening included a spectacular sight as a dragon's scale burst into flames and the campfire roared to life. Scouts and their families then enjoyed many entertaining songs and skits performed by other scouts, leaders and family members. In fact, we had more families sign up to perform skits than in any other time in Pack 54 history, and as we were leaving on Saturday afternoon, many Scouts and family members were talking about researching and practicing skits for the August Pack Campout. You won't want to miss it! The campfire activity also included a flag retirement ceremony led by Mr. Hodgeman, and we're proud to report that the Scouts carried out their duties with reverence.
On Saturday morning, we awoke to the reveille bugle call and quickly assembled for a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs. After breakfast, uniformed members of the Blue Flame Patrol and the Webelos I den hoisted the flag and led us in the pledge of allegiance. Then, each den participated in activities appropriate for their age level, ranging from hiking and shooting sling shots to throwing home-made lawn darts and learning about knife safety, as well as many other fun events. For lunch, we enjoyed a quick meal of hot dogs, chips and bug juice, and the Webelos dens even allowed their Cubmaster to redeem himself for his poor campfire-song performance of the previous night. Following another couple hours of fun activities, the colors were retired, and in true Scouting spirit, we made sure to Leave No Trace by ending the day with a walk through the fields and campsites to collect any trash that may have been left behind by ourselves and others who came before us.
Throughout the weekend Scouts in all dens had the opportunity to earn advancement and belt loops, make new friends, learn new campfire songs and enjoy camping in the beautiful outdoors. Thanks to everyone who helped organize and carry out this great event, and a special thanks to our Camping Chair, Mr. Moody, for organizing the events and coordinating the meals.

This morning about fifteen Scouts and about ten leaders from Pack 54 gathered at the Monroe Veterans Memorial to pay tribute to those who died in our nation's service. The Webelos assisted one of our local Boy Scouts in passing out programs to those arriving for the ceremony, and six of the leaders hoisted the flags for our armed forces. The Scouts looked sharp in their Class 'A' uniforms and were all respectful throughout the ceremony.
This past Thursday, the Webelos and Boy Scouts placed flags at the graves of local veterans to honor them for their service to our country. Highlights of the evening's activities are pictured in the Photos section in the left-hand navigation bar. |

Congratulations to all the Tiger Scouts, Cub Scouts and Webelos who crossed over into their new ranks this evening! We had a packed house for the event, which celebrated the boys' achievements throughout the year and culminated in the awarding of the neckerchief and slide for the new Wolf, Bear and Webelos ranks. Those boys who were in the Webelos I program this past year were awarded the Blue Flame patch to signify their transition into a patrol--one step closer to becoming a full-fledged Boy Scout. We look forward to welcoming our newest scouts to the Pack at our May 15th Meet-n-Greet event, which will be held at the Monroe Church of the Nazarene.
As the incoming Cubmaster, I look forward to growing my responsibility within the Pack and to driving this growth through continued partnership with Bob Hodgeman, as he provides mentorship and support via the Assistant Cubmaster role. It will be a great learning and growth opportunity for me, and this just demonstrates how Scouting can provide positive rewards to not only the participating boys but also to the adult volunteers, as well. This evening we had a number of adults indicate their interest in supporting the Pack through a variety of volunteer roles. As a volunteer organization, we appreciate everyone who steps up to the challenge of providing whatever level of support that each is able to provide. If you are interested in volunteering with Pack 54, whether for a single evening, a couple of months or even an entire year, and you have not yet communicated this interest to a Pack Leader, I encourage you to reach out to one of us and help strengthen this organization and the experiences we provide to our boys. |

Pack 54 has been mentioned in two recent publications by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA): The Fireside Chat (April, May, June 2012 issue) and the April Investment Report. These reports highlight our fall popcorn sales success and our recent Heroes Night event.
Led by our popcorn kernel, Bryan Dessauer, we raised the 4th largest sum in the Dan Beard Council during the Fall 2011 Popcorn Drive: $29,498. The Bears anchored these sales with an astounding $12,344.08 in total sales, followed by the Tigers ($7,351.91), the Wolves ($5,819.52) and the Webelos ($5,433.23). Pack sales leaders include:

Bears: Ben ($1,576); notable mention: Gavin, Hayden, Jackson, Chris ($1,000+)

The Dan Beard Council also recognized us by listing our Heroes Night right up there with the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade. As BSA put it, "Pack 54 from Monroe sure knows the best way to say 'thank you' to its local heroes - make it a community effort. It was a wonderful event full of patriotism!" That's exactly the message that we want to send to our heroes, our community, and the rest of the scouting organization.
Congratulations to all Pack 54 leaders, scouts and Akaelas for this well-deserved recognition. Thank you for helping Pack 54 set the standard throughout the Dan Beard Council! |
